Despite the warm temperatures and sunny skies, many students are feeling a shadow looming as back-to-school season creeps closer. After weeks of lazy, summer days, late nights, varying routines and minimal math stimulation, the return to school can seem overwhelming to students of all ages.

To help parents and children get ready for the new school year, Richard E. Bavaria, Ph.D. and senior vice president for education outreach for Sylvan Learning, offers tips to ease the transition from the beach to the classroom and jumpstart sluggish summer brains.

"Our Math Problems
Will Be Solved!"

"It's frustrating sitting in math class and trying my best, but not getting it," explains Karlie, a 15-year-old upcoming high school sophomore in Texas. "Before algebra, I had an A average. I just needed help to better understand the math concepts and someone to give me a boost of confidence."

Due to Karlie's success in Sylvan's algebra program, Karlie decided to prepare for the upcoming school year's geometry class. "To gear up for the next school year, Karlie decided to attend Sylvan over this summer. This will allow her to feel confident heading back into the classroom and already have an idea of what her teacher will be talking about in math class," says her mother. "I like attending Sylvan's summer classes because, when school starts, I'll be ahead," adds Karlie.
